WPRB 2007 DJ "Best of" Lists
---------------------------------------------
Art Andrews
WPRB and listeners,
In 2007 the total number of bands I saw exceeds the total number of
new albums I fully digested, so I am in a better position to list the
best shows I saw in the year. This list is unordered.
Jay Reatard / Used to Be Women / Hunchback at Cakeshop. James
Reatard Jr. is the voice of my generation. Used to Be Women was a
pleasant surprise.
Black Moth Super Rainbow at Aladdin's Garden: Along with most of
the audience, I sat in a bed of soft vegetation while the band
played in this small outdoor venue, and contracted poison ivy.
Reigning Sound at Maxwell's - a slight disappointment given my
fanatacism for RS but satisfying nevertheless
Amon Amarth at Irving Plaza - great great great. Holiday gift
idea: a leather belt like that worn by the lead singer that
holsters a horn filled with beer. I am more convinced than ever
that Viking imagery is the perfect vehicle for conveying the band's
lyrical themes.
Sightings, Ex-Models, and Oneida at a PS1 outdoor event,
especially Signtings getting booed by half the audience ("a
festival crowd" in the parlance of Spinal Tap), which made the
other half of the audience cheer louder, all of this making them
play better (noise).
Mika Miko and Numbers at Death By Audio: When Mika Miko played a
Misfits cover, a girl jumped off PA speakers and in the process
kicked me in the head with her Keds sneaker size 7. I'm in
love.
Electrelane and The Blow at the Bowery Ballroom. Charmed by The
Blow's between-song anecdotes about her songs.
Springsteen and the E Street Band at the Wachovia Center. What
can I say about this.
Begushkin and Phosphorescent at a house off the Morgan L stop -
Begushkin was really great. I preferred their wholly electric live
sound to the mostly acoustic sound of their recently released debut
album.
Clockcleaner, WZT Hearts, These are Powers at Silent Barn
Pissed Jeans and Eddy Current Suppression Ring at Death By Audio
- Clockcleaner and Pissed Jeans are the only bands I saw this
year that play seething mad. Please, more.
Pink Reason, Little Claw, and Home Blitz at The Charleston pizzeria.
At this place you can get a free pizza
with each beer, but the free pizza runs out at a certain hour,
which is gross because after that time people start picking at
pizzas that were left over by people who left (because the free
pizza ran out).

Favorite Lyrics of 2007:
Bjork- "Earth Intruders"
Here come the earth intruders
We are the paratroopers
Stampede of sharpshooters
Come straight from voodoo
With our feet thumping
With our feet marching
Grinding skeptics into the soil
--
Calvin Harris "Acceptable in the 80's" (also to top my non existent most obnoxious riff i can't get out of my head, and song I can't stop singing lists)
I've got love for you
If you were born in the 80s, the 80s
I've got hugs for you
If you were born in the 80s, the 80s
--
The National- "Fake Empire"
Stay out super late tonight
picking apples, making pies
put a little something in our lemonade and take it with us
we're half-awake in a fake empire
--
I'm From Barcelona- "Treehouse"
I have built a treehouse
I have built a treehouse
Nobody can see us
it's a you and me house
I've been climbing rocks and stones
been collecting broken bones
I've been swimming across the lakes
just to find this perfect place
I got lost into the woods
I've been covered up in mud
I've been going through a lot
just to find this perfect spot
--
Devendra Banhart- "Seahorse"
I want to be a little seahorse...
Well I'm scared of ever being born again
If it's in this form again
Well I wanna know how why where and when and then
I wanna see you be the bright night sky
I wanna see you come back as the light
--
The Acorn - "Crooked Legs"
...I looked up and picked out a map in the sky
no need for the nude of the moon as I'm guided by fireflies
and they whisper prayers to my feet
as I tiptoe through gardens minding the slumber of parakeets
and lovers on the way
I won't feel the pull of the coming day
or the compromise of sleep
'cause I've got a fire on the soles of my feet...
--
Animal Collective - "Fireworks"
...I can't lift you up cause my mind is tired,
it's family beaches that I desire.
That sacred night where we watched the fireworks.
They frightened the babies and you know
they've got two flashing eyes and
if they are color blind, they make me feel,
that you're only what I see sometimes....
--
Clipse- "We got it for cheap"
Fear him, as soon as you hear him
Upon my arrival, the dope dealers cheer him
Just like a revival, the verse tends to steer 'em
Through a life in the fast lane, we German engineer 'em
No serum can cure all the pain I've endured
From crack to rap to back to sellin' it pure
For every record I potentially sell in the store
It's like Mecca to the dealer that's sellin' it raw
So many deceive ya
I'm on top with the ki's, move over Alicia
I force feed ya the metric scale
Rap's like child's play, my show and tell
Within each verse you see the truth's unveiled
They manufacture proof as they lie to themselves
Puppets on the string like a yoyo
Bouncin like a pogo, they prayin I never go solo
--
Beirut- "Forks and Knives (La Fete)
Uptown, the street's in a calming way
And outside is warm as a bed with a maid
And I find it's all our waves and raves
That makes the days go on this way
--
Grizzly Bear- "Knife" (for prolific covering, by Beirut, CSS, etc)
Can't you feel the knife?
--
Dan Deacon- "Wham City"
'Bout big sharks
Sharp swords
Beast bees
Bead lords
Sweet cakes
Mace lakes
O MA MA MA MA MA MA MA MA HEY!
--
Le Loup- "We are gods! We are wolves!"
A storm passed overhead
Scratched our world to shreds
Close enough to turn our hairs attention
Turn the air yellow for hours
Have you ever seen such power?
Have you ever loved enough to destroy your love?
You could never love enough.
Give your soul to us/Give your heart to us
--
White Williams - "New Violence"
old pains make the perfect color
on stage with the melting order
new violence
new violence
--
Yeasayer - "Sunrise"
up on the shoulder
i stay watching, working, getting older
you take a million years out of my hand.
but I'm starting to lose my place
in the circles that i trace
and if i live you're only left with my face
hearing the sunrise
i'm only hearing the sunrise

17 parts mayonaisse

Roasted Lamb with Moroccan Spices
1. All-day Breakfast Sandwiches: A soggy cold full English breakfast
on a sopping wet roll: Egg, fried tomato, beans, bacon, mushrooms,

Best / Most Intriguing Debuts of 2007:
3. Yeasayer - All Day Cymbals
(I feel like this band is teetering on the edge of either being really
cool or being the worst Talking Heads/Styx/Windham Hill Cover Band
ever to exist, and they really could go either way. Pretty
interesting debut, though.)
2. Julianna Barwick - Sanguine
(Brooklyn artist who creates live looped vocal constructions that
sound like they're straight out of some sort of elf temple. 13 songs,
24 minutes. Used to perform under the name Loring.)
1. Neon Coyote: D.A.N.C.E.P.A.R.T.Y., Headphone Hunger, Brooklyn
Bullshit, and Coyote Love mixtapes
(Kind of like Girl Talk but more noisey, glitchy, danceable, and free:
all of these very dense mixes were released out of nowhere within
weeks of each other on the group's myspace
(www.myspace.com/epicbangers). Best moment: Brooklyn Bullshit -
Junior Senior/Joy Division/Salt n Peppa.)
Zoe (Backwood Robotics)
