By Chester, whose dulcet tones can be heard on TOTALLY WIRED (Thursday, 9-11PM)
Ok, guys. I know that this column jawn is called “The YouTube Scholar.” But this week’s video is from… VIMEO?!?!?! Why?
As you probably know, Vimeo is an entirely different beast than YouTube. Vimeo is marketed as some kind of quasi-social media video thing (I’ve never been entirely clear on what would make someone choose to upload things to Vimeo rather than YouTube beyond that annoyingly cutesy blue-and-white video player that doesn’t load unless you’re watching it with a CERN-level mainframe, but I digress…) so the videos you get there are usually current and a little bit navel-gaze-y. That vibe discourages the brave, music-collecting, souls of the internet from uploading, say, The Kids’ complete debut album as a 40 minute, single freeze-frame vid.
If you want a great punk cut from 1976, Vimeo is the wrong place to look.
But my primary responsibility as a DJ is not to just dig up forgotten musical artifacts from the internet’s depths. I’m here to get on the air and show you that “dank new shit” generally, and that, more specifically, “great music with guitars is not dead”.
So that’s where Vimeo comes in.
Videographers that want to be relevant-by-association with that afore-mentioned cutsey-ass, blue and white Vimeo player will often use the site to put up great quality videos of bands performing live.
The video I’m sharing with you today is the latest from northern Jersey garage-rock legends Liquor Store. The whole outfit is an impressive unit of trashy swagger, dangling gold chains (specifically in the case of frontman and former Titus Andronicus drummer Sarim Al-Rawi), and loud electric guitars. I was fortunate to see these guys at Death By Audio a couple months back, and was really impressed by their on-stage presence. This is no-frills rock ‘n roll, performed with conviction, backed up by great songwriting chops.
Definitely check out their debut album from Almost Ready records, and if you have the chance, SEE THEM LIVE.
