Jon Solomon’s 24-Hour Holiday Radio Returns To WPRB On 12/24!

Mark your calendars, set the clocks: Jon Solomon’s 23rd Annual 24-Hour Holiday Radio Show is coming soon! The marathon begins on Friday, December 24 at 6:00 PM ET and ends Saturday, December 25 at 6:00 PM ET.

It’s not Christmas without Jon’s annual holiday marathon. Seriously! From the absurd and bizarre to the beautiful and almost-kinda-holy, Jon’s show traverses the terrain of holiday music. No two marathons are alike, and perhaps that’s why listeners both near and far flock to the radio and/or webstream. So says Inside Jersey:

Forget the Bing Crosby-Nat King Cole-Mariah Carey loop that seems to air on every station in every mall – Solomon mixes covers of traditional hits with songs by bands from the region, recordings lost to attics and basements, and esoteric picks like “Mr. Russian, Please Don’t Shoot Down Santa’s Sleigh,” a Cold War-era number.

Which is not to be confused with “Can Santa Miss Those Missiles,” Solomon says.

You can RSVP for this show on Facebook.

Jon wants you to know that if you would like to make some requests, by all means get in touch.

The 2010 Xmas Playlist will be updated in real time.

Party Photographers perform on "Her Jazz" this Monday 8/23 at 9:00 PM ET!

Join Her Jazz with Maria T for an in-studio performance by Philadelphia’s Party Photographers on Monday 8/23 at 9:00 PM ET sharp!

We’re big fans of their reverb-laden pop around here, and their sound hasn’t gone unnoticed in Philly either.

Here’s what the Philadelphia City Paper’s John Vettese had to say about a recent performance:

“So it’s what, only two songs in and somebody at stage left throws something at Party Photographers singer Elizabeth Rogers. She takes no guff – tosses it right back, doesn’t let it distract her from delivering on her band’s fuzzed-out pop bliss tones. Except, as we’ll see, there’s more to them than this…but dude is relentless. He continues antagonizing, and she hits a breaking point. From the center of the crowd, we watch Rogers dumping the remains of a Natty Boh on the provocateur, and he relents. And it’s back to the music. Right the fuck on.

Party Photogs get drawn into Jesus and Mary Raveonettes parallels for their speedy rhythms and reverb’d take on proto-rock n roll. And sure, the influence is undeniable. So what? It sounds phenomenal bouncing off the cement walls of Kensington DIY space The Ox. And it made the moments where they slowed it down into a tense simmer all the more striking, breathtaking. Rogers and her three bandmates… can slam you into a fierce dancing frenzy with their fastest songs. But their introverted moments have such a grip, you won’t make a peep, lest you get in a fight with the band. And you don’t want that.”

Enjoy an archived version of Monday’s in-studio performance!

Famous Accompanists, the Christoph Eschenbach Installment

Tuesday, July 20th, 8:30-11am discover a wide variety of music performed by Christoph Eschenbach! Because Eschenbach is such a wonderful musician in so many regards, the Famous Accompanists show will deviate from its normal scope of chamber music and art song.  He is the only musician that I know of who has mastered orchestral conducting, opera conducting, solo piano, and collaborative piano.  He has even made some fantastic piano duet recordings!

Among other things, we will hear the Trio and Finale of Act III of Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier (sung by Renée Fleming, Barbara Bonney, Susan Graham and Walter Berry), Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin (performed by the Orchestre de Paris), Schumann’s Six Etudes in Canonic Form (arranged for two pianos by Debussy and performed by Eschenbach and Tzimon Barto), Saint-Saens’ La muse et le poete (a piece for cello, violin, and orchestra, with soloists Steven Isserlis and Joshua Bell), and (my personal favorite) various Schumann Lieder (performed with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau) accompanied stunningly in a seeming mix of techniques drawn from Gerald Moore, Roger Vignoles, and Gilbert Kalish!

Broadway Voices with Sandy

On Friday, July 16th, from 11AM to 1PM, we will be listening to 2 shows:First, “Fiorello” (1959), with music by Jerry Bock. Members of this original cast recording cast include Tom Bosley, Howard Da Silva, and Patricia Wilson. The second show is “I had a Ball” with music and lyrics by Jack Lawrence and Stan Freeman. This 1964 original cast recording features Buddy Hackett and Richard Kiley.
