Review: James Blake’s Retrograde

By Chantelle (PRB Staff)

Retrograde is the first song off James Blake‘s new album, Overgrown–to be released April 8th.

I sat down on Monday with my special, first-listen headphones and let myself escape into the song.

Blake’s humming–backed first by a piano and followed by a steady, heavy beat–pulled me in. The introduction of a forward moving electronic hum livened up the soulful track. This pattern continued moving through several seamless variations. Eventually, this hum disappeared and I was engulfed by a steady beat below Blake’s soul-drenched humming as the track faded.

I will leave it to you to listen to this amazing track for yourself. Be sure to also check out Blake’s video for the new single. With the beauty of the both the video and track, I have high hopes for Blake’s new album.
