Friday 5/8, 10PM: Deena Live on "Nocturnal Transmissions"!

On Friday 5/8 at 10PM ET, Dr. Cosmo and “Nocturnal Transmissions” welcome New Jersey’s own Deena!

Deena is Deena Shoshkes, the singer-songwriter who fronts the veteran Jersey power-pop group the Cucumbers. The sounds on Somewhere in Blue are a unique blend of new wave rockabilly, country and folk rock, filtered through Deena’s long-time indie pop sensibilities. Songs written with Tennessee-based lyricist David Graham (four of which appear on the CD) led Deena into country music, old and new, and southern rock, and inspired a new voice and direction in Deena’s solo songwriting as well. Recorded in Nashville, with producer Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Josh Rouse) and New Jersey, with The Laughing Boys, Tom Lucas and Ed Iglewski, the recordings bridge the distance between Deena’s roots in New Jersey music (from Hoboken indie pop to the Jersey shore) and alt country Americana. WPRB presents The Pains of Being Pure At Heart on 5/6!

WPRB & R5 Productions are proud to present everyone’s favorite twee act THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART on Wednesday, May 6th at the Barbary (951 N Frankford Ave) in Philadelphia! This show is ALL-AGES and starts at 6:30PM!

It should come as no shock that we love The Pains… noisy brand of rock — and they love us too, it seems! Their self-titled debut for the Slumberland label has taken the country by storm:

If dreamy, ’80s-sounding indie pop is your thing, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart have your number in a big way. Close your eyes and this local quartet will whisk you away to a magical land of Smiths posters and John Hughes montages. Like riding your bicycle to your friends house after you’ve finished your homework.

Stay tuned to WPRB — you can win tickets to this show!

Also on the bill are Brooklyn’s Za Za. What we’ve heard sounds good, so come early to check them out!

Update: Canadian Invasion Has Been Postponed!

Eeep! According to Dr. Cosmo, Canadian Invasion won’t be performing this Friday night on WPRB after all:

Due to a last-minute conflict, Philadelphia popsters Canadian Invasion will be unable to perform on Nocturnal Transmissions this Friday, April 24. I am working with the band to reschedule their appearance and will let you know as soon as this occurs.

As such, it looks like it will simply be me spinnin’ ‘n’ grinnin’ during the program. Tune in and let’s see where we go together! Avanti!

Fri 4/24, 10PM: Canadian Invasion Live On "Nocturnal Transmissions"!

On Friday 4/24 at 10PM ET Dr. Cosmo and “Nocturnal Transmissions” welcome Philadelphia’s Canadian Invasion! (This performance has been postponed for a later date. Stay tuned!)

Take unlikely proportions of airline food, Built to Spill, and power pop sensibilities, mix, stir, electrify and bake over a copper wire, then serve chilled. This Philadelphia-based group answers your desperate musical questions with amusing and pointed lyrics and guitar whimsy. So says Magnet Magazine:

As if handed some imaginary baton from the late, great Bigger Lovers, the five-piece Canadian Invasion has inherited the title of Philadelphia’s best power-pop band. The proof is in sophomore album Three Cheers For The Invisible Hand (Transit Of Venus), a smartly written critique of—and ode to—suburbia. Three Cheers doesn’t rock the suburbs with rote teenage angst or anti-sprawl tirades, however; the voice of singer/guitarist Andy Canadian is coming from inside the ranch house, detailing the funny and sad lives of the members of an American family lost in their own bland anonymity. The clever lyrical conceit is held up by sturdy guitar-pop songwriting; Canadian Invasion sounds like Fountains Of Wayne with considerably less cheese, swapping regressive teenage fantasies and gimmicky Cars keyboards for Kinks-like character sketches and Teenage Fanclub guitar chime.

Friday 4/3: The Tea Club Live On "Nocturnal Transmissions"!

On Friday 4/3 at 10PM ET Dr. Cosmo and “Nocturnal Transmissions” welcome Philly/NJ prog rockers the Tea Club!

Intensely punkish and atmospheric lyricism stitched with dramatic shifts and structured intentionality is the cloth of progressive rock from which this band is made. Rather than recycling the old prog themes, The Tea Club forges new paths and creates a sound that is immediate and urgent.

Wed 4/1, 5PM: "Rhythm of the One" Pays Tribute to Eddie Bo

On Wednesday 4/1 at 5PM ET, WPRB’s Rhythm of the One program pays tribute to the late Eddie Bo. Bo, a sorely under-appreciated veteran of the New Orleans R&B scene, passed away March 18th at the age of 78.

Eddie Bo was a veteran singer, songwriter, producer and pianist on the New Orleans R&B scene. Bo evolved into one of the city’s foremost funk players during the late 1960s and early 1970s, although he never had a national hit commensurate with his musical standing.

On this program, DJ Matt will feature music from Bo’s career, not to mention other obscure New Orleans funk musicians (Chuck Carbo, Wardell Quezergue and The Gaturs), and some more well-known N.O. funk bands.

Wed 4/1: World Broadcast Premiere of Phillip Glass' "The Juniper Tree"

Join Marvin Rosen and Classical Discoveries for the the world premiere broadcast of the opera “The Juniper Tree” by Philip Glass and Robert Moran, this Wednesday 4/1 at 11 AM ET.

“The Juniper Tree” is an opera in two acts for chamber orchestra, small chorus and soloists. It was commissioned the American Repertory Theater (Cambridge, MA) and debuted in 1985.

Glass and fellow composer Robert Moran collaborated in virtually equal measure on the composition of The Juniper Tree. A Glass scene is followed by a Moran scene, with transitions composed by each. The result is a fascinating hybrid, each composer holding on to his own identity while melding with the other.

The famous Grimm fairy tale tells of a Wicked Stepmother who murders her stepson and serves him up in a stew to his unsuspecting father. The boy’s sister buries her brother’s bones under a Juniper Tree, and the child’s spirit returns as a singing bird who wreaks vengeance on the evil Stepmother before being restored to life in the bosom of his family. One of the most tuneful operas in the Glass repertory.
